Angus beef verification

Angus beef verification

The ViaGen DNA verification system for beef has come up with some surprises. This animal genomics company in Austin Texas has used its AnguSure scheme to verify the pedigree of beef labelled Angus and found wide variation across seven retail brands, with more than half the samples from one brand failing the criteria with the result that the supermarket chain discontinued the source. In January, the USDA approved this DNA verification program for marketing purposes. For work at Biomeriex, Whatman and WAWA on DNA testing of food see the proceedings of the recent IDTechEx conference Food Traceability Dallas Feb 1-2.

The IDTechEx conference Food Traceability 2006, held on February 1-2 2006 in Dallas, USA, was a great success with attendance from 13 countries. There was a consensus that track, trace and identify are merging as both sciences and needs. Requirements and executions before and after the farm gate are also becoming seamless. These barriers are rapidly breaking down. New sources of data such as RFID, 2D barcodes and widespread DNA analysis are creating a challenge in the sheer volume of data generated. www.trackingfood.com
